6 St Patrick’s Day Cocktails
Pints and Paddys go hand-in-hand, and we’ve got plenty to go around. Shamrock down to Salt Dog Slim’s this St Patrick’s Day for the ultimate boozy bash.
On Monday the 17th of March, you’ll find Salt Dog regulars grooving to Irish bangers and chugging Guinness like it’s their job (but not before lining their stomach with one of our hell-raising hot dogs).
It’s our favourite day of the year, so don’t miss out on the craic. Here are 6 of our favourite St Patrick’s Day Cocktails to give you inspo.
1. Hobo Punch
A local legend in its own right, Salt Dog’s signature ‘Hobo Punch’ will get you up and keep you up this Paddy’s Day. With enough Buckfast to keep you charged, this tropical sensation makes high-octane partying all but guaranteed.
We use a good London dry base mixed with the syrupy ‘tonic’ wine known as Buckfast. Topped with fruit juices galore, is it any wonder Hobo Punch has been a Seel Street classic since 2010?
Ingredients:
- Gin
- Buckfast Tonic Wine
- Tropical juices (e.g., pineapple, orange, passion fruit)
2. Salt Dog Millionaire
Not for the lily-livered, the Salt Dog Millionaire is a powerhouse concoction. Watch in awe as our expert mixologists combine rum, sloe gin, apricot brandy, passion fruit and fresh lime to create the cocktail that we know and love.
When you’ve been slinging back bevvies all day, this is the Paddy’s Day treat that’ll get you back on track.
Ingredients:
- White rum and sloe gin
- Apricot liqueur
- Passion fruit syrup/purée
- Fresh lime juice
3. When Lola met Brando
For a classic Jack & Coke taken up a notch, Salt Dog’s When Lola met Brando is dangerously sippable. This whiskey cocktail captures the transatlantic spirit: an American whiskey base with a hint of Italian liqueur sweetness.
What better drink for an Irish celebration in a Liverpool bar?
Ingredients:
- Jack Daniel’s
- Amaretto
- Cherry Cola
4. Irish Coffee
We’re not quite at beer garden ‘shades in the sun’ weather, so why not warm up on Paddy’s Day with a classic Irish coffee?
Invented in Ireland in the 1940s, the Irish Coffee is made using a classic whisky (we recommend Jameson) mixed with hot coffee and sugar. Stir together, top with cream, and you’ll soon be sipping sweet coffee through the cool cream head. Belter.
Ingredients:
- Irish whiskey (e.g. Jameson)
- Hot brewed coffee
- Brown sugar
- Heavy cream (lightly whipped to float on top)
5. Nutty Irishman
Lovers of creamy Baileys, gather round: the Nutty Irishman is your answer to sweet treat cravings. It’s built on two essentials: Irish cream liqueur and Frangelico hazelnut liqueur, a 50/50 mix of creamy and nutty flavours.
Some recipes add a splash of Irish whiskey or even mix in hot coffee, but the core combo of Baileys and hazelnut is what gives the drink its name.
Ingredients:
- Irish cream liqueur (e.g., Baileys)
- Hazelnut liqueur
- (Optional: Irish whiskey or hot coffee for an extra kick)
6. Black Velvet
Black Velvet, if you please. This festive, St. Patrick’s Day treat was apparently first mixed in 1861 London to mourn Prince Albert’s death: dark Guinness stout blended with champagne to tone down the celebratory bubbles.
Usually served in a flute, it even looks the part: black beer topped with a frothy white head, almost like a dressed-up pint of “the black stuff.”
Ingredients:
- Guinness stout
- Champagne
